Start with what matters
The February 2021 winter storm left millions of Texans without power, some for days. A good backup plan starts with a list: heat or AC, the refrigerator, medical equipment, internet, and lights. That list decides the size and type of system.
Portable generators
A portable generator is the lower-cost option. It must connect through a transfer switch, or an interlock kit with a power inlet, so it can't feed power back onto the utility lines. Running one into the home through an extension cord, or plugging it into an outlet, is dangerous and illegal.
Always run a portable generator outdoors, well away from windows and doors.
Standby generators
A standby generator is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts automatically when the power goes out. Sized properly, it can run the whole home.
Transfer switch or interlock?
A transfer switch powers a set of circuits you choose. An interlock kit lets a generator feed your whole panel, one breaker at a time, up to its capacity. Both are safe and code-compliant when installed correctly.
